My Journey of Learning to Sew

For those of you who are new to this website, this is my journey of learning to sew.  I hope that it encourages and inspires you to not give up on your dreams to learn!

“My plan” (lol – I always laugh at that statement!!!) was for me to learn how to sew first, and then after my oldest daughter was a little older I would start teaching her.  Of course, things never quite turn out how you think they should.   HOWEVER, it turned out better than I could have hoped for!!!

As I first started trying to learn to sew, I experienced the woes of feeling very ignorant just trying to read a pattern and became discouraged of the possibility of even trying to teach my girls on my own. At the time, I was using a machine that I had borrowed.   But after receiving a new sewing machine from my sweet husband for my birthday, I became bound and determined to fulfill my desire to learn to sew.

As I said, “my plan” was to learn everything before trying to teach my kids.  At this time, our two oldest daughters were 3 and 6.  "Of Course, they have to be older to start sewing, and Of Course I need to know it all before I start teaching them – right?"  But what happened was amazing!  As I was learning, my girls caught my enthusiasm and in amazement I literally watched them flourish in learning to sew right along with me.  Quite honestly, because we knew nothing, I experienced a real freedom in my own education.

By age 8 yrs. old, our middle daughter was sewing her own dresses, and by 11 yrs. old, our oldest daughter had a passion for sewing, was a better seamstress than me, and started a purse business where she is continuing to sell her products online and in small boutiques to people across the United States.

I have been so blessed by this experience that I had to pass it on, which is why I started this website!  I wanted to share my journey in sewing; to help others know (with hindsight being 20/20) that the best way to learn is by doing.  I have shared with friends and family our way of learning to sew, as well as the projects and patterns that built our skills, and have seen it not only work for others, but truly bring a delight into the sewing experience.
